for our community
Just across from the Quincy High School parking lot is the public entrance to a beautiful walking path known as the Leonhardt Ranch Trail.
The trail runs through private property protected and managed by Feather River Land Trust and is part of a community nature preserve called the Leonhardt Ranch Learning Landscape. Local schools use the property for outdoor education and the trail is open to the public year-round during non-school hours, including weekends.
A walk along this wide 1.3-mile out-and-back path in any season is always a delight. Few public places provide such expansive views of American Valley and its surrounding peaks. Visitors can count on seeing diverse bird life, from Red-Tailed Hawks and Northern Harriers in the winter to Sandhill Cranes and nesting Red-winged Blackbirds in the spring and summer. The lush willow thickets along the creek might reveal songbirds in chorus, or even an industrious beaver. A winter blanket of snow makes it a perfect spot for a leisurely cross-country ski.
What is this peaceful trail missing? Benches!
People walking the trail need a place to sit and rest, to take in the views, and to just be. FRLT members Karen Kleven and Clare Churchill are leading an effort to raise $2,500 to install 2 benches along the trail. These funds will cover the cost of materials, staff time, and maintenance.
They’ve put together a matching fund of $1,250 so any gift will be doubled, up to the goal! Will you join them and help us raise the funds needed? We’re already getting close but need a little extra support to get to the finish line!
How you can help
You can support this effort by giving online today. Please note in the comments that you would like your donation to support the Leonhardt Ranch Trail benches. Or mail a check to Feather River Land Trust, PO Box 1826, Quincy, CA 95971. Any funds raised beyond our goal will support the ongoing maintenance and future improvements of the property.
Wouldn't a bench be much nicer?
If you've walked the Leonhardt trail before, like Karen & Clare, you may have taken a rest on these concrete blocks. Wouldn't a bench be much more comfortable?!
Benches are just the first step in our plans to improve visitor amenities at this beautiful property. We’re currently creating a land management plan that will outline future improvements to the trail including new and improved signs and potentially a picnic area.
Your support makes all of this possible. Thank you for helping to care for YOUR local community preserve!
